Last week, Philadelphia record label Magic Death Sounds hosted a massive block party in Fishtown, with live music for eight hours. With 10 live acts, multiple vendors and a food truck, the typically inconspicuous Blair Street became an all day party and celebration of local artists. Coconuts were hollowed out and filled with liquor, kegs kept flowing and bodies moved constantly during performances, despite the unrelenting heat.

Magic Death Sounds was born from a passion for seeking out local artistry that remains genuine to the purpose of expression.

The lineup for the third annual block party reflected the founding principles for Magic Death Sounds. There was no genre niche and no specific or identifiable pattern in the artists chosen, except that each artist displayed enormous and unrestrained stage presence. This years lineup included Aphra, Jo Kusy, Whaler, Little Strike, Cherokee Red, Elegant Animals, Power Animal, Laser Background, Hello Shark and Tygerstrype.

Tygerstrype’s Gabriel Guerrero (above) closed out the block party and dancing reached a frenzy to the sounds of experimental pop instrumentals accompanied by raw vocals.  Sweat soaked bodies slowly shuffled out – some still dancing despite the music having ended – as they finished their spiked coconuts, ready to move on to the after party at The Barbary.
