Ben Runyan and Scott Cumpstone of City Rain hit the stage at Johnny Brenda’s a little after nine last Thursday night.

Their set was short but full of pumped-up electric energy, just like their music. Runyan bounced around the stage like a plaid-clad rubber ball while Cumpstone was absorbed in his guitar riffs off to the side. The two rocked out for only a few songs before premiering their new music video, “Join the Human Race” on the venue’s huge, dual screens.

HankCupcake02Immediately afterward, the crowd swelled, beers in hand, and surrounded the small stage. The Israeli pair, Hank & Cupcakes, were the second duo of the night to inject sweaty spirit into the room. Fans started to scream along to the electro-funk that quickly filled up the venue. While singer/drummer/pianist, Sagit “Cupcakes” Shir glowed with all lights and eyes upon her, husband and bassist, Ariel “Hank” Scherbacovsky, tore up side-stage as if he owned the place.

About three songs in, Shir climbed on top of her drum kit to stand while performing. As she hit the symbols now below her, the wide-eyed crowd surged forward as if to match her intensity level.
