It was pretty dark and pretty loud too in Connie’s Ric Rac on Friday night. At about 8:30 p.m., a crowd started forming outside the door and almost everyone had a PBR in their hand. People slowly began to move into venue from the street as they waited for the likes of The Love ClubSandCastle, Snoozer and Time Hitler and the Assholes From Space to start playing.

As The Love Club (above) finished up tuning and started cracking open new beers on stage before their set, the audience inched closer, leaving the bar and pool table behind. Frontman David (Mitch) Esparza, cleared his throat into the mic, checked his strings and started off the band right into a jam. The five-person group kept up a grunge and punk set for about 45 minutes before turning the barely lit stage over to the second act.

The next band, SandCastle, played several songs off their new album, Kisses for Witches, which dropped in March. Although not as energetic as the first group, SandCastle did draw a loyal crowd of  fans to the concert.

The audience nodded their heads in unison to the music and those who didn’t stared straight ahead as if watching the fingers of the guitarist or bassist at work. The members of SandCastle stood all in a line, absorbed in their own worlds of playing their respective instruments.

People continued to fill the venue but we had to get to another party before Snoozer and Time Hitler took the stage.
