August 1, 2011

Merrill Garbus (above) of tUne-YarDs performed before a packed Piazza during the third annual 2nd Street Festival in Northern Liberties.Black Landlord also played at the Piazza, where the Phillies game played on the huge screen behind them (the Phils won 6-5 over the Pirates in the 10th inning). Not sure who the kid is above but he shared the stage with Black Landlord.

The Philadelphia Folksong Society programmed the festival this year and WXPN host Gene Shay introduced the bands at the Piazza.

After Shay introduced Black Landlord, the band’s frontman MAxx said, “Thanks, Salvador Dali.”

Around 27 acts performed at the festival, which ran the length of 2nd Street between Spring Garden Street and Girard Avenue. Vendors, beer gardens and restaurants lined the strip.

Res (above) sang several Stevie Nicks songs on the Poplar Street stage. Ron Gallo (below) of Toy Soldiers closed down the George Street stage with a raucous show that had everyone dancing.Beril Guceri of East Hundred jammed on the Poplar Street stage.
